Director of Worship Arts Ministries

Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church
305 North Congress Street
PO Box 1092
Jackson, Mississippi 39215

Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church, a growing, historic congregation in downtown Jackson, Mississippi, is seeking a full-time Director of Worship Arts Ministries to oversee and give direction to an exciting and comprehensive Music and Arts Ministry. Galloway is a dynamic 2100 member congregation which was first established in 1836. The church is located in downtown Jackson, the capital city of Mississippi, one block from the State Capitol building and Governor’s mansion. Galloway has many exciting ministries seeking to meet the needs of a diverse constituency, which includes everyone from business professionals to a vibrant homeless ministry. Galloway believes strongly in its purpose statement which is ‘revealing heaven on earth through the witness of our personal spirituality, congregational ethos, and works of ministry by faithfully following Jesus.’

We seek a Director who will continue an excellent history of great sacred music and the arts and one who will strive to find new ways of using music and arts in worship in creative and bold ways for today’s diverse congregation. We desire a candidate who is passionate about and skilled at leading all types of music. The successful candidate will have excellent music skills, be of strong personal and spiritual character, and possess the ability to motivate and inspire participants in the music and arts ministries to achieve their very best. A Bachelors degree in music is required, with an advanced degree preferred. Candidates with experience in full-time church music ministry would receive favorable consideration. A solid, pedagogical understanding of the voice is a must. Additionally, this person must be able to work successfully as part of a team and be a proven administrator.

Galloway UMC is blessed with a wealth of resources which the Director of Worship Arts Ministries will oversee. These include a 65 rank Casavant pipe organ, 21 pianos (7 grand pianos), 6 octaves of Malmark handbells, 4 octaves of Schulmerich handbells, 3 octaves of White Chapel handbells, 5 octaves of Malmark handchimes, 4 octaves of Suzuki handchimes, a battery of Orff & Suzuki instruments, and an extensive choral, handbell, and orchestral music library. Currently, the position oversees a full-time Associate Director of Worship Arts/Children’s Music Coordinator, a full-time Administrative Assistant, a part-time organist, two part-time Craft Ministry Coordinators, numerous volunteer ministry leaders, and budget adequate to support these positions. (Note: Galloway’s annual budgeting process is a Lay-led exercise that considers all aspects of the church budget holistically.) The Director will report directly to the Senior Pastors.

The competitive compensation package for this position is commensurate with experience and training. Interested persons should submit a resume and personal statement (Microsoft word or pdf format required) via e-mail by May 8, 2009 to kevans@gallowayumc.org. The personal statement should be no more than 300 words and should address the question: How would you direct the Worship Arts Ministries at Galloway to advance our commitment to revealing Heaven on Earth and what is it about your training, experience and philosophy that uniquely qualify you for this position?
