Organist/pianist position is available immediately at Winnetka Presbyterian Church, in Winnetka, Illinois, a northern suburb of  Chicago .  This search is re-opened and will remain open. The position is part-time, 10 hours per week including preparation, with one worship service at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, choir rehearsals on Thursday nights and Sundays at 8:45 a.m., plus infrequent weddings and funerals.  The musician would be responsible for practicing with and accompanying our professional choir soloists, as well as the children's choir when they sing in a service. Skill as both an accompanist and soloist is desired, with familiarity with standard organ literature and hymnody, and we are looking for someone with good planning and interpersonal skills.  The position is year-round, with extra services on Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, possibly Good Friday (at a community service), Easter vigil, two services on Easter, and two services on Christmas Eve (none on Christmas Day).

Services include prelude and postlude; choral introit and anthem; choral, solo, or instrumental offertory; several hymns, and a little liturgical music. The congregation appreciates sensitive, creative, and energetic text-inspired hymn accompaniment.  The repertoire is primarily classical with additional music from a variety of more contemporary styles, spirituals, gospel, African and other international music, Taize, Iona, etc. The instruments available are an Allen "Renaissance" model organ, 70 ranks (1999), a fine Yamaha grand piano in the sanctuary, and an excellent Clavinova.

We are looking for someone with the equivalent training and musicianship of a master's degree or higher in organ performance or church music with a concentration in organ, and/or the AAGO certification, with experience playing in traditional churches. We desire a musician who has an understanding of, and appreciation for, music in a Protestant church. We offer an annual contract, four Sundays off per year, 12-month salary, and the possibility of using the organ to give lessons.  Salary is within the range suggested by Presbyterian Association of Musicians. Interested organists should contact the director of music immediately, and should send a resume and 2-3 recommendations, to Kirin Nielsen, DMA, Director of Music, at kirin@winnpres.org or 847-446-7777 ext. 24. Select applicants will be invited for an audition and committee interview at the church.
