CANCELLED

16 May 2009

To all our loyal and prospective conferees,

It will come as no surprise to anyone that the current economic crisis affecting our country and the world has taken its toll on every aspect of our lives. Discretionary spending has all but dried up in many households and churches as they struggle just to afford day to day necessities and keep the lights on. This situation has, of course, therefore directly affected our beloved PAM conferences. Registration has been crippled at all 3 of the major summer gatherings –– including the always reliably subscribed Montreat conferences.

Probably because of the particularly hard hit economy of the Northeast, the Westminster Conference has seen much lower numbers sign up than in past years by the “early registration deadline.” Conferences are expensive. The possibility of ours not having enough attendees to even come close to breaking even has now become a certainty. With all the conferences in precarious financial positions, it is not prudent for PAM to continue to encourage a gathering which almost assuredly would lose a good deal of money. Indeed, the very future of the organization could be in jeopardy if careful monitoring and rebudgeting of resources is not undertaken immediately.

So it is with great sadness in my heart that I must relay to you that the Westminster 09‘‘ Conference has been cancelled. This decision, made at a meeting on Friday, May 15 with Alan Barthel, Executive Director of PAM; Scott Miller, President of the PAM Board of Directors and myself, was a very difficult one in so many ways –– not the least of which, for me, is missing the opportunity to worship, pray, learn, make music and interact with you all once again this summer. I express my sincere gratitude to all who have been so loyal and supportive over the years. As far as we know now, this is just a one-year hiatus due to the very deep recession and economic uncertainty. Plan to attend and be refreshed and renewed in 2010.

Blessings and peace,
Richard Herr, Director
Westminster Conference ‘09
